During the first quarter of 2026, the Centers for Medicare and Medicaid Services (CMS) reported that Patterson Healthcare Center was the second largest nursing home in St. Mary County, according to CMS data.

The facility offered 121 beds, exceeding the St. Mary County average by one bed in the same quarter. On average, Patterson Healthcare Center cared for 79.3 residents during this time frame.

The CMS assigned Patterson Healthcare Center an overall rating of 1 out of 5, which is lower than the Louisiana nursing home average of 2.5.

Legacy Nursing and Rehabilitation of Franklin operated as the largest nursing home in St. Mary County for the quarter, offering 152 beds. Legacy Nursing and Rehabilitation of Morgan City held the third spot with 88 available beds.

By the end of the first quarter of 2026, data showed Patterson Healthcare Center incurred $17,280 in one fine and one penalty.

Altogether, three for-profit nursing homes operated in St. Mary County, Louisiana.

According to U.S. Census Bureau estimates, the national population of older adults has continued to climb as numbers of younger age groups have declined. Between 2020 and 2024, the 65 and older age group rose by 13%, while those under 18 dropped by 1.7%. Over the past century, the nation’s older adult population has surged from 4.9 million in 1920 to above 61 million in 2024.

A 2021 study estimates that nearly half of older adults, or about 28 million Americans, could require long-term services and support. The report also finds that more than one-third may ultimately need nursing home care.

“Living a long life is something that many of us want and could get,” said Jesse Slome, executive director of the American Association for Long-Term Care Insurance. “But when we live a long life, the chances of us needing long-term care increase exponentially. But when you need that type of care, there are limited options.”
