The only school district in St. Mary Parish suffered declining enrollment in the 2021-22 school year, according to the Louisiana Department of Education.

There were 7,971 students in the halls of St. Mary Parish School District schools, 0.3% lower than the year before.

Enrollment in St. Mary Parish was steady compared to the state’s trend of decreasing enrollment.

Out of all the students welcomed in the 2021-22 school year, 51.3% of them were boys, and 48.7% were girls.

The most represented ethnicity among St. Mary Parish School District students was Black or African American, accounting for 38.7% of the student population.

St. Mary Parish School District has a main office in Centerville and is the only school district within St. Mary Parish.

Only 22% of Louisiana’s teachers are Black or Latino, compared to about 48% of the state's K–12 students who identify as either race.

In 2022, there was roughly one teacher for every 18 students in Louisiana, which is worse than the national average of one teacher for every 16 students.
